Mizzou Legacy student, Tyson Ellison, poses with his parents, 'Atiyyah Ellison and Jessica Ellison, as he accepts the Mizzou '39 Award, one of the most prominent recognitions a student can receive at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

THE START: mu j-school

Tyson grew up in Boonville, Missouri with three younger siblings and his parents: ‘Atiyyah Ellison, third round draft pick to the Carolina Panthers, and Jessica Ellison, the first overall draft pick on every parent board or community group in Boonville. His parents got him prepared for his career early as an actor in elementary school. Ever since, Tyson has felt his most comfortable in front of the camera.

Tyson attended Missouri Boys State as a News Director in high school, where he discovered his passion for journalism. He took that passion home to work on “SHOWTIME,” a ‘Hard Knocks’ style documentary series based on the Boonville Pirates’ football season. Tyson played defensive end and left tackle at Boonville while making his documentary series on the side.

Tyson earned a preferred walk-on offer at his dad’s alma mater, the University of Missouri, to play linebacker. His collegiate football career mirrored his high school one, in that he diligently worked as a journalist at the same time. During the 2023 football season, he reported at high school games for KOMU 8’s Friday Night Fever and created content for his YouTube channel while wearing the Mizzou Football uniform on Saturdays. In 2024, he added another role, anchoring Sunday morning sports after Saturday games.

After football, Tyson joined the Tiger Kickoff Show. While initially a student project for fun, Tyson worked alongside previous host Jacob Siciliano and ESPN’s John Anderson to create a full-fledged broadcast operation with game day media credentials and expert film analysis in Tyson’s original segment, Sideline Study Hall. In one season (Aug-Dec 2025), the show’s social media channels went from 0 to 2.7M+ impressions. Tyson’s work was recognized with two wins and two nominations in the 2026 NATAS Student Production Awards as well as the Walter Cronkite Scholarship.

In 2026 Tyson will get to film this brother, Braylon Ellison, who just started his career as a Mizzou offensive lineman that January.

Tyson tells his complete story and how his on-field failure led to future success in his keynote speech at the Missouri Interscholastic Journalism Association J-Day.

He also became one of two emcees at the first ever Mizzou First Class Academic Convocation.

SUMMER 2026 IN CONNECTICUT

Following his work on the Tiger Kickoff Show 2025, Tyson earned an internship with the NBC Sports Olympics department in Stamford, Connecticut. His role was “digital video production, meaning he produced content from current and archival Olympic Sports events for the NBC Sports website and YouTube.

Some of Tyson’s most memorable experiences while working for NBCU came from exploring the company he worked for and networking outside of his department:

  • Learning to use WSC AI tools to create highlights and quality control vertical shorts for the World Cup “Can’t Miss Highlights” on Peacock.

    • (He’s in the World Cup Credits!)

  • Shadowing a WWE programming call ahead of Saturday Night’s Main Event at Madison Square Garden.

    • (He was able to tour WWE HQ and attend the show!)

Ultimately, Tyson’s favorite part of the job was sharing an edit room with the NBC Olympics team. He contributed to NBC Emmy submissions and learned editing techniques from multi-time Emmy winners Sam Tydings and Daryel Gonzalez under supervisor Eric Hamilton, and worked alongside talented PA Riley Kraus and Emmy-winning content associate Lily Klima. Tyson also brought his camera to capture content for the internship program, such as the intern interview, and filmed videos for internal communications.

The internship in Stamford also allowed Tyson to pay off a year-long mission. He’d interned with Scarlett Creative Co. the summer before, and continued working with them through the school year to produce and edit content for Ashton Jeanty’s YouTube channel during his rookie season and offseason.

Being in New York this summer allowed for Tyson to finally contribute to Scarlett Creative Co. in person by working as a production assistant for a campaign with Nike TOMA. Tyson shot behind-the-scenes footage of the event and Travis Scott’s appearance. This event taught Tyson how to properly plan and contribute to a “media day” environment, working with multiple clients and sorting creative video to be used across multiple different purposes.

Tyson also learned about work-life balance during this summer. His biggest lesson that he learned, despite all of the career growth, was that there is more to life than what you can produce.
